Cooking chanko nabe like a sumo wrestler in an authentic Japanese cooking class in Tokyo

Starting this December, we’re excited to introduce our brand-new Chanko Nabe & Sake Tasting Class!

If you're visiting Tokyo and looking for a fun, authentic, and interactive food experience, this class is the perfect way to explore Japan’s culinary culture.

In sumo stables, wrestlers share one big communal hot pot—everyone gathers around the same pot and eats together. In this class, you’ll experience that same “sumo-style” dining culture by cooking a hearty Chanko Nabe and sharing it as a group.

This hands-on session lets you prepare the nourishing hot pot that fuels Japan’s strongest athletes, followed by a tasting of carefully selected Japanese sake.

Hands-On Chanko Nabe Cooking in Tokyo

In this hands-on experience, you’ll create a hearty Chanko Nabe just like the kind enjoyed by sumo wrestlers.

You’ll begin by preparing a light kombu broth, then chop seasonal Japanese vegetables and add them to the pot.

You’ll also make mochi kinchaku (mochi-filled tofu pouches loved in Japanese home cooking) and scoop chicken meat mixture from a bamboo tube directly into the simmering broth—a fun and interactive part of the process.

Packed with flavorful ingredients, Chanko Nabe is simple yet deeply satisfying. With every bite, you’ll understand why this nourishing hot pot has been a favorite of sumo wrestlers for generations.

Taste Seasonal Japanese Ingredients

Japan’s seasonal vegetables are known for their freshness, color, and natural sweetness.

During the class, you’ll cook with ingredients sourced from local markets, bringing out their aroma and delicate flavors in your hot pot.

It’s a delicious way to learn about Japanese food culture through its produce.

Enjoy a Japanese Sake Tasting
