Create Your Own Ukiyo-e-Inspired Art Bento in Tokyo

Experience Japanese art and food in a whole new way with our unique Art Character Bento (Art Charaben) workshop, inspired by Bijinga, the traditional Japanese art of beautiful women.

Instead of simply looking at Japanese art, you’ll bring it to life using food.

In this hands-on experience, rice becomes your canvas. You’ll create a portrait inspired by traditional Ukiyo-e beauty prints, carefully arranging colorful ingredients to recreate expressive facial features, traditional hairstyles, and the elegant look of a Japanese woman.

It’s a creative Japanese cultural experience that combines Ukiyo-e art, Japanese food, bento culture, and hands-on crafting—all in one memorable activity.

Create a Traditional Japanese Beauty with Food

Bijinga art

Ukiyo-e is one of Japan’s most iconic traditional art forms, which flourished during the Edo period.

Among the many subjects depicted in Ukiyo-e, Bijinga portraits of beautiful women—became particularly popular. These artworks captured the beauty, hairstyles, fashion, and elegance of women of the time.

In this workshop, you’ll take inspiration from this traditional art form and recreate a beautiful female portrait in bento form.

Rather than painting on paper, you’ll use rice as your canvas and food as your art materials.

You’ll learn how to shape and arrange different ingredients to create facial features, hair, clothing, and other details, turning your bento into a miniature work of art.

A Colorful Bento with Blue Rice

One of the most eye-catching elements of this Art Charaben is the vibrant blue rice.

The rice is naturally colored using butterfly pea, creating a striking blue canvas for your artwork.

You’ll combine the blue rice with colorful ingredients to create the facial features, hairstyle, and traditional Japanese-inspired design.

The finished bento is colorful, creative, and almost too beautiful to eat!

Of course, the best part is that you get to enjoy your artwork as a meal once you’re finished.

No Cooking or Art Experience Needed

Never made a character bento before?

No problem!

You don’t need any special cooking or artistic skills to join this experience. Your instructor will guide you through each step, from preparing and shaping the ingredients to arranging the details of your portrait.

Think of it less as a traditional cooking class and more as a hands-on food art workshop.

You’ll have the chance to get creative, experiment with colors and shapes, and create your own unique Art Charaben.
